Post-modernism design example #1 (6/12)

This design piece relates to the post modernism theme since it contains many of the characteristics used to define this era in design. The piece has many overlapping elements, difference in scale within typography, brighter colors, and cut-out like pictures/words. The main characteristic of post modernism that this piece shows is the collage style. The collage style looks as if the designer took pieces of magazines and impulsively placed them on top of other elements. This college style gives off a playful feeling and follows with the brighter colors that we see in many postmodern styles. The only thing that I see as different between this style and the ones we were shown the PowerPoint (did not have a previous example yet) is the lack of a tilted axis. A lot of these elements were shown on billboards and posters, so I would assume the designer wanted everything to be more legible, so she chose to design everything straight, instead of tilting the type, picture, etc. This example is important to me because I really enjoy seeing the new Olympic designs, because each one is so different. Seeing a design this colorful, playful, busy, and impulsive, and have so much contrast with the black and white elements alongside the flashy colors was something very different and gave a new light onto the Olympics. The Olympics are always seen as so serious, so I feel like this design in 1984 allowed the Olympics to look more playful and personable with its eye-catching design.
