Post-Modern Graphic Design example #16 (6/21)

Aiumy's design, which was a tribute to the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, used several postmodern features. This design is from 2022, so we are able to see how the postmodern features are used today and if the characteristics of postmodernism are still being used. Her design used overlapping elements, flashy colors, a tilted axis, a nontraditional way of placing photos, and multiple textures/patterns, all features of post-modernism. This design has some major differences form the last design, also on Behance, because you can see more of what is going on. The last design was a very bold and extreme take on postmodernism since the artist had so many overlapping shapes, texture and colors within her photos. The last example's type was also slightly illegible, which makes no difference on the design, as they only used random letterers. This designs typography is clear, legible and is even on a tilted axis, which the last example lacked. The last design used a collage style within her photos, which Aiumy's design lacks, but the photos she uses feel that they are from a magazine, the way they look as if they were cut out, which is common within the postmodern style. I think this design captures the features of postmodernism with its tilted axis, unconventional style, overlapping elements, non-traditional typography, the morphing of photos, and the flashy colors. Also, I really love how they did their design on a tribute to an artist, while also incorporating postmodern styles, since this was the style the artist often used. Portraying two different versions of the artists shows how the public saw her as, or who she was described as vs. how she really was, which adds in a current style that is being used today (real vs public image). Overall, the piece is fluent with postmodern features, even though it is in the current era, as well as combines some design styles from now, which is very important as we are able to see some styles mix together to create one cohesive design.
