Post-Modern Graphic Design example #13 (6/20)
Paula Scher has been well-known for her post-modern style within her pieces since she started designing. With her design for Shakespeare in the Park in 2022, she uses several characteristics in the postmodern style era, including overlapping elements, flashy colors, titled axis, unconventional elements, and different typefaces. Since this design was created in 2022, and not produced in the actual post-modern era, you can see the later typefaces used, as well as more work done within the typography. Scher uses several different typefaces, as well as adds elements into her main type, like overlapping the purple floral graphic with the type and the yellow lightning bolt. She also uses a tilted axis which makes the audience read all the way around her design, creating a more eye-catching design. This design is inconsistent with the last example by Wolfgang because he focused on greyscale instead of the flashy colors common with post modernism. He did create an overlap with the background elements and type just as Scher did in this design, although he does not show a tilted axis like she does. I think this design is very important because it shows a very simplistic way of overlapping and how you can add something different to an informational design. With her use of a tilted axis within her type, the different fonts, overlapping the text with her background graphics, and lowering the opacity of that text, it draws the audience in. I find myself reading every piece of information, not because the event caught my eye but because the design did. The flashy colors that are common with post-modernism help contrast with the black and white of the piece, and the hierarchy of the typography help add a lot of post-modernism into the piece as well as draw your eyes in.
